World is witnessing an unmanageable environmental issues these days. Exponential rise in population is laying huge burden on natural resources that are not managed properly. Uncontrolled and mismanaged use of natural resources is degrading environment day by day. Water resources are excessively polluted and toxic emersions from industries and vehicles is polluting air. Changing market scenarios and a growing consumer economy has given birth to new problems like polythene, indisposed garbage and uncontrolled sewage which is generally directed to rivers of water sources.
What people need is a wake of awakening and a sight to save our land for future generations. You can help environment to get degrade to a level where it becomes a danger for human lives. As a volunteer, you can generation awareness in masses about saving environment from ill practices.
There is not enough food in India’s hungry and excessive and age old farming techniques is doing no good. India’s economy is an agriculture based, but traditional farming practices, mismanaged land, inadequacy of knowledge has rendered huge availability of natural resources abortive. You can help farmers by educating them about better agricultural practices which increases crop product. You can also serve them by devising plans for them, that how and when to grow what crops so as to gain the best yield.
Water Resource Management
Water is as essential to life as blood to body and efficient water resource management and development are pivotal to sustainable growth and hence poverty reduction.
Population growth and mismanaged resources have rendered to greater appreciation of the value of water in ecosystems with continuously deteriorating water quality.
As a volunteer you can work to save water bodies such as rivers, lakes, wetlands etc. Also you can help community organizations to manage projects such as: community lift irrigation systems, building check dams, gully plugs etc to save and harvest water.
Due to incompetent usage of natural resources, and also inadequate availability of resources, drought is commonplace in many regions of India, major being Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh etc. To combat situation, many NGOs in partnership with Government, local communities and other organisations executes Drought Proofing Programmes. You can help these NGOs in there efforts for implying drought proofing techniques in arid and semi-arid regions of India.
India’s forest wealth is characterized by a diversity of soil types and climate and responsible for development and evolution of this age old civilization. Forest cover in India has reduced to less than 22% in past years. Forest covers help in sustainable development of communities by providing resources, preventing soil erosion, saving water and beyond. You can help Community Organizations by working on afforestation projects here.
Wild life is an indefensible part of our ecosystem, they are nature’s gift and they adorn the beauty of life in their unique ways of existence. But many of the species are endangered due to negligence and growing deforestation. Human civilization is posing a huge threat to wildlife and they do require a special attention else world will lose its heritage and ecosystem will lose its balance. As a volunteer, you can help save wildlife and hence the human race itself.
The Indian subcontinent is a home of a large and varied flora as well as fauna. Boundaries of India covers a wide range of ecological hot zones and hosts three biodiversity hot spots, viz: the Western Ghats, the Eastern Himalayas, and the hilly ranges that span the India-Myanmar border. You can work with these alluring biodiversity conditions and save them from threats posed by growing industrialisation and deforestation.
